What does Do Not Track (DNT) mean?

DNT is a concept promoted by regulators such as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to companies operating on the Internet to develop and implement a mechanism that allows Internet users to control the tracking of their online activities on websites through browser settings. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is working with industry teams, web browsers, technology companies and regulators to develop a DNT technology standard. Although some progress has been made, the work is proceeding at a slow pace. To date, no standard has been adopted.
